The mayor of Narón, Marián Ferreiro, along with the head of basic services and maintenance of the City Council, collected this Wednesday at the Pazo de Santa Cruz de Ribadulla, in Vedra, the Green Flag of Galicia. This distinction, awarded by the Xunta, recognizes the environmental best practices of municipalities, and Narón has obtained it for the second consecutive year.
The Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Ángeles Vázquez, presented the award to 39 municipalities. Ferreiro emphasized that the flag "is the result of the work of many people and projects that the residents of Narón notice in their daily lives", adding that "for visitors, seeing the Green Flag gives a clear idea of who we are, a municipality that cares for its environment and compels us to continue on this path".
Narón's candidacy focused on the pedestrian and cycle path along the Freixeiro River, spanning 2.2 kilometers, as well as traffic calming and the removal of architectural barriers around the CEIP Piñeiros school and in the Praza do Concello de Xuvia. The management of organic waste, with 52 collection points, and domestic composting programs were also highlighted.
The submitted report also included the maintenance of over 400,000 square meters of green areas, the enhancement of the Ruta dos Muíños (Route of the Mills), and the Centro de Interpretación dos Muíños Industriais de Xuvia (CIMIX). Furthermore, improvements to the water supply network, the expansion of LED lighting, and environmental education workshops in schools were mentioned.
The Green Flag of Galicia, established in 2020, aims to distinguish municipalities that develop good practices for environmental care, respect for the landscape, and the reduction of emissions and energy consumption.
