The initiative, promoted by the Xunta de Galicia together with the University of Santiago de Compostela and the Cathedral of Santiago, is consolidating itself as an academic reference for the study of the Camino. The 2027 program includes three international research grants, the eighteenth edition of the International Xacobean Lectures, and online courses open to participants from different countries.
The objective is to promote knowledge of the history, heritage, and cultural and social dimension of the Jacobean routes, contributing to the preservation of their values and the improvement of the pilgrim experience, in line with the objectives of the Xunta's Master Plan for the Caminos de Santiago.
Additionally, awards for research, final degree and master's projects, and a prize for the best videos created by USC students will be announced, aiming to involve the university community in the dissemination of Jacobean heritage.
The training offer will be completed with two massive open online courses (MOOCs) on the Jacobean topography of Santiago de Compostela and the international projection of the Camino.
This reinforcement occurs in a context of growth for the Camino, with over 531,000 pilgrims having collected their Compostela so far this year, already surpassing the total for all of 2025. Foreign nationals represent 61% of the total.
