USC Professor Antonio Salas has received the Premio da Crítica de Galicia in the science and technology research category for work identifying molecular tools to differentiate pediatric pneumonia.

Professor Salas received the award for research that identified molecular tools to differentiate pneumonia caused by the bacterium Mycoplasma pneumoniae from other pneumonias in pediatric patients.
The jury considered that this research, published in the journal Nature Communications, opens “new possibilities to improve diagnostic performance, avoid inadequate treatments, optimize antibiotic use, and advance towards more personalized medicine”.
The jury was composed of Belén Riveiro Rodríguez (CINTECX of UVigo), Olga Aguín Casal (Deputación de Pontevedra), Gumersindo Feijoo Costa (USC), Juan Pablo Hervés Beloso (CINBIO of UVigo), Susana Ladra González (CITIC of UDC), Ana Isabel Rodríguez Pérez (CIMUS of USC), and María Teresa Vilariño Barreiro (UDC), who served as secretary.
