The head of the health portfolio explained that this service has been progressively integrated into the public network of the Galician Health Service (Sergas), recalling that Galicia recognizes, respects, and protects women's right to abortion under current state legislation. Currently, all Galician health areas have specific circuits to attend to women requesting this service, with a homogeneous organizational model that allows access through Family Orientation Centers or health centers.
The care pathway includes clinical assessment and necessary tests in the hospital setting, the procedure itself, and subsequent follow-up. Voluntary pregnancy interruptions of less than 14 weeks are performed in reference public hospitals, while between 14 and 22 weeks, the clinical requirements of state regulations apply. For cases over 22 weeks, there is a specific procedure involving authorized clinical committees.
Gómez Caamaño highlighted that Galicia ranks among the communities with the highest proportion of public healthcare in this service, reaching 99% in the first half of 2026, compared to 96% in 2025. He noted that when care cannot be provided at a specific public facility or the woman requests a contracted center, the service is still guaranteed and funded by the Sergas. The model combines priority in public centers with an additional guarantee so that no circumstance becomes an obstacle.
The regional official also emphasized that the Xunta de Galicia respects and will continue to respect women's rights and current legislation, ensuring that all applicants receive the care they are entitled to. The healthcare organization considers the availability of professionals and their right to conscientious objection.
