The Ferrol Health Area begins tomorrow in the trial of the Combogal clinical study, an initiative by the Xunta to assess the effectiveness of the combined flu and covid vaccine in individuals over 65 years of age.

The Combogal clinical trial, developed collaboratively between Denmark and Galicia, primarily aims to evaluate the capacity of this combined vaccine to prevent hospitalizations due to acute respiratory infections. The Consellería de Sanidade, through the Dirección Xeral de Saúde Pública, will send informative SMS messages to approximately 730,000 people across Galicia to inform them about the project and direct them to vaccination points.
In the Ferrol Area, participants who receive the SMS can attend the Clinical Analysis Laboratory of the Hospital Arquitecto Marcide do CHUF over the next five weekends. The hours will be from 09:00 to 14:00 and from 15:00 to 21:00. There, nursing professionals will randomly administer either the combined vaccine or separate vaccines, ensuring that participants "will leave the hospital protected against flu and Covid".
Those wishing to book an appointment can do so through the Sergas Móbil app or by calling 900 842 217, available from 10:00 to 20:00. Informed consent can be signed electronically for the first time in this type of study.
The study methodology involves half of the participants receiving the combined vaccine and the other half receiving the vaccines separately. It is estimated that this simplification can improve vaccination coverage and system efficiency. The main purpose is not to seek scientific evidence on the combined vaccine, which is already authorized, but to evaluate the best protection strategy for the Galician population over 65.
The vaccination campaign against flu and covid began in September in nursing homes and is progressing in health centers, prioritizing those over 80 and healthcare professionals. The campaign will continue until December 31.
