Renovation works around the parish church of Santa Cristina de Campaña in Valga have commenced. Councillor Carmen Gómez visited the site to oversee the project, aimed at improving accessibility and enhancing the local heritage of this 12th-century Romanesque temple.
The project focuses on humanizing the land adjacent to the church and the rectory. The current asphalt surface will be removed and replaced with new stone paving. A section of the municipal road in front of the temple will also be resurfaced with exposed aggregate concrete.
The plan includes the installation of new urban furniture, landscaping, and specific signage to prioritize pedestrian access in the area. Necessary conduits will also be laid for the future undergrounding of overhead service lines.
This initiative for heritage enhancement and recovery is the result of inter-administrative collaboration, with the City Council and the Xunta de Galicia signing an agreement for its financing totaling 153,520 euros.
The Church of Santa Cristina, dating back to the 12th century, is notable for its single nave, semi-circular triumphal arch, and original Romanesque portal. The sacristy is a later addition, and the bell tower is a detached square-plan structure erected in the late 20th century. Inside, the 16th-century mural paintings in the apse, restored in 2014, depicting religious scenes, stand out.
