The city of A Coruña is today the epicenter of DATAfórum Justice, a national congress in its fifth edition that brings together dozens of experts to reflect on the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on justice and other disciplines. The event, which will take place until this Friday, October 23, was inaugurated by the mayor, Inés Rey; the Secretary of State for Justice, Manuel Olmedo; and the Vice-Rector for Digital Strategy and Artificial Intelligence at the Universidade da Coruña, Laura Castro.
In her inaugural speech at the main auditorium of Palexco, Mayor Inés Rey emphasized that "during these days, A Coruña will be a meeting space for professionals, researchers, companies, and institutions that share a common concern: how to harness the potential of data and artificial intelligence to build more efficient, more competitive, and also more human societies".
For his part, Secretary of State Manuel Olmedo defended the positive role that new technologies can play in a system with full guarantees and respect for citizens' rights, stating that "these days we will debate the impact of new technologies on the administration of Justice and how we can use them as a lever to strengthen the social pact that our political coexistence represents, based on democratic principles and the protection of individual rights and the social and democratic rule of law".
Rey also highlighted the challenges posed by technological advancements for modern societies and reflected on the role institutions must play to ensure development is both sustained and sustainable. "Innovation only makes sense when it improves people's lives," she stated, adding that A Coruña's commitment to digital transformation is not a passing trend but "a vision of the city" that considers knowledge, technology, and talent as "decisive factors for generating well-being, opportunities, and economic development".
The mayor also emphasized A Coruña's role in Spain and Europe in the emergence of new innovation projects and the concrete application of technological tools to the daily functioning of the Administration. She noted that A Coruña's selection as the headquarters for the Spanish Agency for the Supervision of Artificial Intelligence was a recognition of its trajectory and its assets for Spain's technological future.
In addition to the conferences, DATAfórum Justice features the art exhibition "Arte y Justicia en la era de los datos" (Art and Justice in the age of data), showcasing the winning works of a competition on Justice and AI, which can be visited at Palexco until Friday. The event, organized by the Ministry of the Presidency, Justice, and Relations with the Courts, also includes sessions on hate crimes, disinformation, and data protection, as well as the DATAthon and Promptatón competitions to find innovative solutions and explore the possibilities of AI applied to anonymized judicial documents.
