The Minister of Culture, Language, and Youth, José López Campos, urged the central government in Parliament today to provide the city of Vigo with a State Public Library, an infrastructure the Xunta has awaited for years and for which it has already submitted a needs plan.

The Minister of Culture, Language, and Youth, José López Campos, lamented today in Parliament the lack of progress by the central Executive in the construction of the State Public Library in Vigo. López Campos recalled that the Xunta de Galicia "has been waiting for years" for this infrastructure, highlighting that the Vigo City Council formalized the cession of the necessary plot for its construction last month, a step that unblocks the process after several years of delay.
The representative of the Galician Government emphasized that the Ministry of Culture received an updated needs plan for the future library in July 2025, adapting the original 2020 report. López Campos stressed that the Xunta "is prepared to assume the management of this facility with its own funds, once it is built," as they already do in other Galician cities.
The minister underscored the urgent need for this project, considering that Vigo, "a city with a large population," currently lacks a state library, while other cities with fewer inhabitants do have one. The Xunta advocated in its needs plan for a building area of 8,000 m2, exceeding the dimensions of other Galician libraries such as those in Ourense (7,000 m2), Santiago de Compostela (5,800 m2), and A Coruña (6,200 m2), and anticipates it will become a cultural benchmark.
