The Xunta de Galicia highlights the importance of communication, innovation, and research for the future of the forestry industry, particularly in the pine sector, during the Planforlab technical seminar held in Ponteareas.

The Director General of Forest Planning and Management, Luisa Piñeiro, today inaugurated in Ponteareas (Pontevedra) the technical seminar "Health and improvement of Pinus Pinaster forests", organized by the Operational Group Planforlab. The event brought together researchers, representatives of forest owners from Galicia and Portugal, and entrepreneurs from the pine sector to reflect on the current state of these conifer forests.
In her speech, Piñeiro emphasized communication and collaboration among those involved in the sector, as well as innovation and research, as fundamental drivers for the future of the forestry industry. The meeting included presentations on the organizing group and the Xinzo-Ponteareas forest laboratory, as well as debate panels on pine tree health, genetic improvement, silviculture, and timber demand.
The Director General pointed out the need to advance in genetic improvement and the application of silvicultural techniques adapted to Galician forests to increase productivity, improve timber quality, and enhance resistance against pests, diseases, and climate change. She also highlighted the role of research and innovation in ensuring the sustainability and economic profitability of pine forests, stressing the importance of strengthening collaboration between research centers, forest owners, and the timber industry.
Initiatives like Planforlab, which uses the "forest laboratory" concept for experimentation and research, are key to improving the health and productivity of conifer forests through innovations in genetic material and adaptive silviculture. These efforts will allow for the evaluation of forest stands and the transfer of results from the forest laboratory to the wider territory, contributing to their resilience and productive capacity.
