The University of Vigo is hosting various initiatives to honor women of the sea, emphasizing the figure of oceanographer Ángeles Alvariño and the work of fisherwomen, net makers, and cannery workers.

The University of Vigo continues its tributes to women of the sea through several initiatives. The Central Library hosts the bibliographic exhibition Un mar de mulleres (A Sea of Women), featuring photographs by Mar Caldas, the recent recipient of the 2026 Critics' Prize of Galicia. Concurrently, the exhibition Oceánicas, pioneiras da Oceanografía (Oceanic, Pioneers of Oceanography) has been moved to the Experimental Sciences building.
The arrival of this latter exhibition on campus was inaugurated with a talk-café by Alberto González Garcés, former director of the Oceanographic Center of Vigo and the Technological Center of the Sea. During his presentation, Garcés paid a special tribute to the figure of Ángeles Alvariño, recognizing her as the first Galician oceanographer of global renown.
González Garcés highlighted Alvariño's significance not only for her research, in which she described 22 new marine species, but also for being a pioneer in boarding a British research vessel in 1952. He emphasized her strong and determined character, as well as her contribution to scientific knowledge and dissemination, noting she was one of the few Spanish scientists listed among the 1000 most important researchers in history.
The exhibition at the Central Library, titled Un mar de mulleres, presents portraits of women connected to maritime sectors, inspired by art masterpieces, alongside historical photographs of net makers, fisherwomen, and cannery workers. A bibliographic selection and a digital collection on the Perseo search engine are also available. The exhibition can be visited until October 30th.
