The decision was made in an extraordinary session with a favorable result of 131 votes in favor, 8 against, and 11 abstentions, comfortably exceeding the 20% threshold of the Senate required to initiate the process. The draft prepared by the previous Commission was sent to all members for the new one to decide whether to use it as a starting point or begin anew.
The rector, Rosa Crujeiras, explained that it is about "continuing with the necessary debate that the reform requires" and that the pending Senate commissions will now be formed. She added that, in compliance with the Organic Law of the University System (LOSU), universities were required to approve new Statutes by the end of March, therefore "it is now necessary to activate it through this new Senate and its Statute Development Commission".
During the subsequent debate, attendees agreed to request a "calm" and "time-bound" reflection to address significant issues for the University of Santiago, such as its new functional and administrative structure.
The rector thanked the work carried out by the previous Statute Development Commission, "especially those who participated in the report and with special consideration to those who assumed leadership of the work, notably Professor Xerardo García Mera".
