The Minister of Health, Antonio Gómez Caamaño, accompanied by the territorial delegate of the Xunta in Pontevedra, Pablo Fernández, inaugurated today in Pontevedra the XII Congress of the Galician Society of Nephrology, where he highlighted the potential of the GaliON project for the early detection of kidney disease with the support of artificial intelligence.

The event, which brings together professionals to share knowledge and experiences on the care of people with kidney disease, also served to underline the importance of continuous training and research promoted by the Galician Society of Nephrology.
Gómez Caamaño focused on the need for scientific advances and collaboration among professionals to translate into better patient care. In this regard, he highlighted the value of the integrated care process for chronic kidney disease, introduced in 2023, which establishes shared criteria between primary care, nephrology, and nursing to guide patient identification, referral to specialized care, and follow-up frequency.
The GaliON project, which uses an algorithm integrated into electronic health records, facilitates early detection and monitoring of chronic kidney disease. Launched in 2023 in Ourense, it is progressively extending to the entire public health system of Galicia, and lists for participation in the health area of Pontevedra and O Salnés have been open since October 1st.
Furthermore, the Galician Health Service promotes home dialysis, a modality that benefited 246 people in Galicia in 2025, as an alternative to promote patient autonomy and the reconciliation of care with daily life.
Galicia achieved a historic high in kidney transplants in 2025 with 229 procedures, 10% more than the previous year, marking the highest figure since the program began in 1981. The minister thanked the generosity of donors and the work of the professionals.
