The environmental awareness project “Birding Ortegal” is now underway in the Ortigueira City Council after obtaining approval from the Consellería do Mar for regional funding. The initiative, part of the Participatory Local Development Strategy of the Local Action Group for the Fishing Sector (GALP) 1 A Mariña – Ortegal, is 100% publicly funded, co-financed by the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFF), with a total investment of 49,005 euros.
The inaugural event was attended by the councilors for Culture, Ana Cartelle, and Economic Promotion, Isabel Rego. The itinerant exhibition consists of eight informative panels equipped with QR codes that provide extended information on the species, habits, and ornithological values of the ria de Ortigueira and Ladrido. This exhibition will be displayed at key locations within the municipality to bring the natural heritage closer to residents and visitors.
In addition to the exhibition, the project includes the creation of a digital educational unit specifically adapted to the curriculum for the third cycle of Primary Education. This pedagogical resource with interactive activities and content on local birds will be hosted on the municipal website and will serve as a conceptual basis for the future Bird Interpretation Centre of the municipality.
The work plan will also focus on these digital and itinerant awareness tools, in addition to carrying out school field trips.
