The San Sadurniño Council now has a detailed inventory of the flora on its land, identifying 75 species and 893 trees and shrubs across 4.5 hectares of public spaces.

The work, carried out by biologist Álvaro Barros López between April and June 2026, covers twelve plots and provides a snapshot of the municipality's natural heritage. It highlights the variety of native species along the Xubia riverbank, traditional fruit trees in the Carlos Fornos conservation orchard, and singular trees in the Marquesa gardens, some of which could be included in the Catalog of Singular Trees of Galicia.
The inventory uses common Galician names, prioritizing popular terms from San Sadurniño and Ferrolterra, and is supplemented with scientific nomenclature. The biologist notes that local popular terms were used and scientific names were added for easier identification.
Among the studied areas, the Galician Arboretum (1.85 hectares) stands out for its representation of Galician forests like oak and birch groves, with 63 birches, 33 hazels, and 27 ashes among other species. It is described as the plot "with the greatest abundance and variety of native forest species".
The Carlos Fornos conservation orchard (0.86 hectares) serves as a reservoir for traditional varieties, featuring 270 fruit trees, including 168 apple trees and 36 cherry trees. The biologist emphasizes its importance for maintaining local varieties adapted to the environment and its educational value as an "important reservoir of native fruit varieties".
The Gardens of Pazo da Marquesa (1.5 hectares) preserve specimens of great interest due to their size, age, or rarity, such as two magnolias, four Canary Island date palms, one Spanish fir, and one Lawson cypress. Some are considered potential singular trees.
Other sites included in the study are garden areas at the Town Hall, the Cultural Center, Ramón Díaz Raña Square, the green space of Santa María Church, and the gardens of Belén Chapel and Antonio Freijomil López Park. Both large trees and ornamental plants are documented.
The general list also shows the prevalence of species like 169 apple trees, 39 London planes, 37 cherry trees, 33 hazel trees, and 27 ash trees, alongside oaks, cork oaks, and various ornamental species. It also accounts for 22 linear meters of hedges and approximately 80 square meters of ground cover plants.
Mayor Secundino García Casal commented that the work "allows us to have a documentary reference on the composition and distribution of flora on municipal land," facilitating the identification and conservation of public plant heritage.
