The Director General of Commerce and Consumption, Gabriel Alén, visited San Cristovo de Mouricios (Chantada) to learn about the course on the traditional French technique of Bouyricou basketry, taught by Corentin Laval and Karen Gossart. This initiative is part of the Fibranzas. Laboratory of plant fibers project.
Alén stressed the importance of these actions for transmitting artisanal knowledge and the need for comprehensive training to improve the competitiveness of active artisans and attract new talent to the sector.
The training program Fibranzas, initiated in 2025 and part of the Learning from Tradition. Trades and Techniques initiative by the Galicia Crafts Foundation, aims to delve into basketry techniques and their contemporary possibilities. The project was nominated for the 2026 National Craftsmanship Awards in the Promotion Award category for Public Entities.
The current course, running until Wednesday, October 21st, includes 14 students who will learn French basketry techniques under the guidance of Corentin Laval and Karen Gossart from the L’Oseraie d’Ile project, who cultivate their own raw materials.
Corentin Laval will demonstrate the traditional spiral weaving technique of Bouyricou from the French region of Périgord, while Karen Gossart will teach a wicker weaving technique for new forms, known as Panier Galicien.
