The Combogal clinical trial, promoted by the Xunta to evaluate the best vaccination strategy against flu and covid for people aged 65 and over, has already seen the participation of 4,916 individuals in its first two weekends.

The study is being conducted in all health areas of Galicia, including hospitals in the seven cities and seven regional hospitals. The health areas of A Coruña and Cee recorded 1,023 participants at the A Coruña University Hospital and 152 at the Virxe da Xunqueira Regional Hospital in Cee. In Santiago de Compostela and Barbanza, 583 joined at the Santiago de Compostela University Clinical Hospital and 193 at the Barbanza Regional Hospital. The Ferrol area contributed 536 participants at the Arquitecto Marcide Hospital. In Lugo, A Mariña, and Monforte, there were 469 at the Lucus Augusti Hospital (HULA), 138 at the A Mariña Regional Hospital, and 84 at the Monforte Regional Hospital. In the Ourense, Verín, and O Barco area, 429 people participated at the Ourense University Hospital Complex (CHUO), 74 at the Verín Regional Hospital, and 75 at the O Barco Regional Hospital. The Vigo area added 532 participants at the Álvaro Cunqueiro Public Hospital. Finally, in Pontevedra and O Salnés, 442 people participated at the Provincial Hospital and 186 at the O Salnés Regional Hospital.
In recent weeks, informative SMS messages have been sent to a selected population of approximately 730,000 people over 65. The trial is being developed within the framework of the ordinary vaccination campaign, and the appointment itself to attend the health center also provides information about the possibility of going to the hospital to participate in the study.
The main objective is to check if a combined vaccine against flu and covid reduces the risk of hospitalization, complications, and death, compared to the simultaneous administration of a high-dose flu vaccine and another against covid in separate injections. The combined vaccine has already been tested and authorized, so the study aims to determine the most suitable protection strategy for the elderly population.
Interested individuals can book an appointment through the Sergas Móbil app or by calling 900 842 217, operational from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Slots will be available for five consecutive weekends at the 14 public hospitals of the Galician Health Service.
The vaccination campaign against flu and covid began on September 28 in nursing homes and sociosanitary centers. On Tuesday, October 13, the vaccination of healthcare professionals and children started in health centers and pilot schools. On Monday, October 19, it was extended to people aged 70 and over. The campaign schedule will continue on November 2 with the vaccination of pregnant women and, from the 9th, with people aged 60 and over.
