The piece, with an original idea, script, and documentation by Carlos Callón and produced by Nós TV, will premiere on October 24th at 12 PM on the Diputación's YouTube channel and Nós TV. It will also be available on channel 9 of Nós TV and Movistar+.
The Deputy for Equality, Sol Agra, highlighted the importance of recovering and publicizing stories that have been left out of the historical narrative, such as those of lesbian women in the Middle Ages through 'cantigas de amiga'. Agra emphasized that the documentary contributes to shedding light on historically invisible realities and linked the recovery of historical memory with the defense of LGTBI+ rights.
The deputy also highlighted the value of the research supporting the piece, which will allow the public to access an important historical discovery about the experiences and affective relationships between women in medieval Galicia.
For his part, Carlos Callón thanked the Diputación de A Coruña for its commitment to the recovery and dissemination of historical memory and sexual diversity, pointing out the need to combat the silencing of these stories.
The documentary arises precisely from the desire to rescue these voices from oblivion and contribute to a more complete vision of medieval society. 'Cantiga de amiga' sheds light on the story of Sancha Pérez and María Leve, who lived in Compostela in the 13th century, the only case in Europe with a recorded lesbian couple's name, and also on María Mateu and relationships between 'soldadeiras' (female soldiers/companions).
