The Mayor of A Coruña, Inés Rey, presented today the Galician tour of 'As Cigarreiras', a musical and theatrical spectacle promoted by the Municipal Band of Music and Cántigas da Terra, which will be performed at the Palacio de la Ópera on November 19th.

Following the success of its performance during the Classical Week of the María Pita Festivals 2025, the Municipal Band of A Coruña (BMMC) and Cántigas da Terra are collaborating again on this production promoted by the City Council. The mayor highlighted the initiative's value in recovering the memory of the female workers of the Palloza Tobacco Factory and the 1857 revolt, considered one of the first union struggles led by women in Europe.
'As Cigarreiras' is an extraordinary example of how culture allows us to recover our history and give voice to the women who helped build the A Coruña we know today. It is a show that moves, vindicates our collective memory, and projects our cultural identity into the future," stated Rey.
Rey also emphasized the collaboration between the Municipal Band, an "essential cultural institution that contributes to democratizing access to culture," and Cántigas da Terra, "a cultural benchmark not only for A Coruña but for all of Galicia" due to its century-long trajectory in defending and disseminating Galician language, music, dance, and traditions.
More than a hundred artists participate in 'As Cigarreiras', which combines symphonic music, choral singing, theater, and dance. The production brings together the Municipal Band, the Galician Choir Cántigas da Terra, and the Santaia Dance Group on stage, along with a notable cast led by actress Isabel Risco.
The work recovers and updates the genre of the 'estampa gallega' (Galician vignette) to pay homage to the women who led the revolt of December 7, 1857, a key episode in the city's social and labor history and the workers' movement.
The mayor concluded by stating that "A Coruña is a city with talent, creativity, and a rich cultural tradition. Projects like 'As Cigarreiras' are the best demonstration of the capacity of our institutions and professionals to create innovative proposals based on our heritage and history."
Invitations for the performance at the Palacio de la Ópera will be available starting at 1:00 PM this Tuesday, October 20th, at Ataquilla and at the ticket office in Plaza de Ourense. Each person can collect up to four invitations.
