The Faculty of Communication at the University of Vigo hosted WordPress Campus Connect this Thursday, a training event focused on the world's most widely used web content management system.

Under the slogan “create your digital future with WordPress in one morning”, the event allowed students to delve into the management of this open-source tool, which originated two years ago at a university in India and is promoted by the global WordPress community. The day included talks on the applications of artificial intelligence in web design and the use of metrics to optimize pages, as well as an introductory workshop.
The inauguration was attended by the campus's vice-rector, Marián Fernández, and the Vice-Rector for Teaching and Educational Transformation, Xabier Martínez Rolán, who emphasized the importance of “advocating for free software” and encouraged students to find an “ally” in WordPress for their future professional careers. Also participating were Javier Abuín, coordinator of the Master's Degree in Social Media Communication and Digital Content Creation, and web developer Juan Hernando.
Juan Hernando, co-organizer and representative from Weglot, recalled the collaboration between the local WordPress community and the University since 2018, which has fostered events like WordCamp Galicia and the first WordPress Campus Connect in the region. He noted that WordPress “powers over 40% of the world's websites” and highlighted the professional opportunities it offers.
Digital business designer Ana Cirujano opened the session with a presentation on how artificial intelligence can assist in web design, content organization, and message enhancement, without fully delegating the design process to avoid generic or unmaintainable results.
Subsequently, software engineer at Automattic, Javier Tiniaco, focused his talk on using metrics to make “better-informed decisions, using data” regarding user behavior.
The event concluded with a practical workshop, “Create your WordPress website from scratch”, led by Automattic software developer Javier Amieiro, who guided students through website configuration, design selection, content incorporation, and the use of basic editor tools.
