The Minister of Health, Antonio Gómez Caamaño, along with the territorial delegate of the Xunta in A Coruña, Belén do Campo, the manager of the Galician Health Service, Luis León, and the health area manager, Ángel Facio, visited the Home Hospitalization service at the Gil Casares Hospital. Caamaño highlighted that the incorporation of the municipalities of Outes, Mazaricos, Santa Comba, Muros, and Carnota completes 100% coverage in the Santiago de Compostela and Barbanza health area.
This service guarantees specialized hospital care at home, improving patients' well-being and quality of life by allowing them to receive care without altering their routines or being away from family. The Santiago de Compostela and Barbanza health area now has 9 home hospitalization teams, each composed of a doctor and two nursing professionals, totaling 31 professionals.
The minister also highlighted the increase in care activity, which rose from around 700 annual admissions in 2025 to 1,850, with a projection to reach 2,000 admissions this year. By 2027, a tenth team is planned to be added to specifically serve residents in socio-sanitary centers in the Compostela area.
Gómez Caamaño emphasized the substantial progress made by the Galician Health Service, which four years ago covered approximately half of the territory and 60% of the population in the Santiago area. He also mentioned the progressive incorporation of services such as care for patients with heart failure, complex infections, or hematological diseases, as well as the administration of treatments and transfusional support at home.
