The Director General of Fisheries Development, Ángeles Vázquez Suárez, presided over the ordinary session of the Network between the fishing sector and the scientific community of Galicia (Redemar), held telematically on October 16, 2026. The objective of the technical meeting was to analyze and evaluate the initiatives submitted by research entities, universities, and the maritime-fishing sector itself to strengthen sustainable management and knowledge of marine resources.
During the meeting, the green light was given to the selection of three strategic applied research projects. The initiative Mariskeo seeks shared solutions to improve hand-gathering shellfish farming through the active integration of entities such as the Provincial Federation of Confrarías of Pontevedra, the University of Vigo, and the CSIC. Monimar-27 was also approved, led by CIMA, CETMAR, and the Galician Federation of Fishermen's Guilds, which directly continues the Ecosistémica24 project to maintain and deepen historical data series on shellfish farming. Finally, Calimar-2, developed by the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC), was endorsed to study productivity in various coastal enclaves.
The approval of these proposals will allow for expedited processing through advance payment, enabling research teams and the sector to begin fieldwork early in the year. The remaining new projects submitted in this call will be analyzed at the next ordinary meeting, scheduled for early 2027.
Furthermore, the meeting agreed to approve five modification and extension requests for ongoing initiatives. These include extensions for Ostreares (recovery of the flat oyster in the San Simón estuary) and Resalber (molecular markers for salinity resistance in clams), both developed by the Marine Research Centre of Galicia (CIMA). The continuity of Zamfer (evaluation of the scallop in the Ferrol estuary) and technical adjustments to projects Bivalfood (bivalve feeding in San Simón) and Algasdet (early detection of the invasive alga Rugulopteryx okamurae) were also authorized.
Ángeles V. Suárez highlighted that the selected proposals directly and operationally address the real needs of maritime professionals, avoiding duplication and prioritizing research with immediate practical application for Galicia's coastal productive fabric.
