The initiative, held in the Sala de Graos of the Faculty of Philology, was inaugurated by the Vice-Rector for Research and Open Science, Almudena Hospido Quintana, along with the Dean of Philology, Elias Feijo Torres, and the director of iLTIUS, María José Alonso Veloso. The program included dissemination panels and will continue with another panel and a practical workshop.
As stated by the director of iLTIUS, Science with Letters was created "as a space dedicated to presenting the wide range of projects, individual or group, that are underway at iLTIUS." She emphasized the importance of institute members knowing each other better to "foresee possible collaborations between groups from different areas," as "only by knowing what we do will we be able to transfer it to other fields".
María José Alonso Veloso highlighted the richness of the program, representing "eleven philological expressions of the indispensable role that the humanities play and must assume in today's world." She also advocated for the role of humanities in science, stating that "studies concerning Letters, Languages, and their cultural manifestations are Science, and science needs letters to be complete in its function of serving society".
The director also mentioned recent activities supporting research staff, such as research stays abroad for two researchers and summer scholarships for four students of Linguistics and Literature.
Furthermore, iLTIUS will promote a roundtable discussion in November on Artificial Intelligence and digital humanities, addressing their risks and opportunities in linguistic and literary research, given the interest and concern the topic generates.
