Galicia participated this week in Helsinki in the launch of the European project AURORad, an initiative funded by the EU4Health program aimed at improving the quality and safety of medical procedures involving ionizing radiation.

The project brings together 110 organizations from 29 European countries, including health authorities, radiological protection bodies, hospitals, universities, and scientific entities. The initiative, with a total budget of €14.37 million (of which €11.5 million is funded by the EU), will run from October 2026 to September 2031 under the coordination of the Finnish radiation and nuclear safety authority STUK.
The Consellería de Sanidade, through the Servizo Galego de Saúde, the Axencia Galega de Coñecemento en Saúde (ACIS), and the Empresa Pública de Servizos Sanitarios Galaria, is part of this consortium. The Galician delegation in Helsinki included the director of the Health Innovation and Development area of ACIS, José María Romero, and specialist professionals from Galaria, Antonio López Medina, Benito Andrade Álvarez, and Francisco Mosquera-Pena.
Galicia's participation strengthens the international collaboration of the community's public health system in radiological protection and care quality, enabling the sharing of expertise and contribution to the development of best practices. AURORad is part of the European Commission's SAMIRA Action Plan and contributes to the objectives of the Europe's Beating Cancer Plan.
Its work streams cover the justification of diagnostic tests, clinical audits, incident learning, dose management, image quality, protection in pediatric imaging and during pregnancy, image-guided radiotherapy, and radiopharmaceutical therapy.
The Servizo Galego de Saúde will contribute to work packages related to clinical audit, procedure justification, incident learning systems, dose management, and image quality, as well as image-guided radiotherapy and training. ACIS will provide expertise in innovation project management and training, while Galaria will lead technical tasks in incident learning and dose management.
