The Minister of Social Policy and Equality, Fabiola García, announced today in the regional Parliament that the Xunta's new budgets will allocate €1.535 million to this area, representing a 10% increase and making it the department with the highest growth. García reaffirmed the Galician Executive's commitment to a care model that respects individuals' freedom to choose where and how they wish to be cared for.
The minister highlighted the historic boost to dependency care, now serving over 99,200 people with services or benefits, achieving a 99% care ratio, and reducing waiting times by nearly three months. Galicia is the autonomous community that has most expedited the processing of these resources.
García stated that the Xunta's model addresses the majority preference of dependent individuals to remain cared for in their homes. To this end, the Home Care Voucher (Bono Coidado no Fogar) will increase its budget in 2027 to €277 million, nearly €100 million more, allowing for an increase in beneficiaries of this aid, which already exceeds 43,000. The network of 'casas do maior' (elderly homes) is also expanding, with over 150 facilities in rural areas, and the Home Help Service (SAF) is being reinforced with an extra €150 million for local councils.
Regarding residential care, publicly funded places will increase through new residences financed by the Amancio Ortega Foundation, the Investment Plan, and a new project that foresees the creation of 25 new centers and over 1,800 places, generating more than 4,000 direct and indirect jobs.
Fabiola García criticized the central government's management, accusing it of "profiting at the expense of Galician dependents." She pointed out that in the last year alone, the central government increased its debt in this area by €250 million, bringing the total to over €3 billion. She lamented that the central government continues to fail to contribute the 50% of the dependency funding required by law and applies different criteria across territories.
