The Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Ángeles Vázquez, announced the initiative during a visit to Oroso, where the local council will carry out the renaturalization of the Alexandre Bóveda square with regional aid. The network aims to go beyond simply designating refuge spots, offering a practical and ecological dimension with real data and action priorities.
With a total budget of 2.88 million euros for the upcoming year, the network's creation will be key, supported by a call for local entities to apply nature-based solutions. The minister emphasized the importance of climate action at the local level, recalling the introduction of a new municipal aid line in 2025.
The project in Oroso, receiving 60,000 euros from the Xunta, will increase the green area of Alexandre Bóveda square by 650 m2 and connect it with the fluvial environment of the Tambre River, reducing the urban heat island effect and enhancing biodiversity with native species.
“"Climate action by administrations must also be built from the local level."
The minister highlighted the Oroso Town Council as an example of municipal commitment to climate action, emphasizing the benefits of the planned intervention in strengthening the connection between urban and fluvial spaces, reducing the heat island effect, and promoting biodiversity.
