The Tomiño Council renews for the second consecutive year the Galicia Green Flag, an award granted by the Xunta that distinguishes Galician municipalities committed to territorial protection, responsible resource use, and improving residents' quality of life.
The Councilor for the Environment, Ana Belén Casaleiro, collected the award on October 21st in Vedra, stating that the recognition "endorses a way of governing that incorporates environmental care into municipal decisions". She noted that "behind this are years of planning and concrete actions" and that the distinction is "support for the work done and an impetus to continue moving forward".
The report presented by the Council details energy transition measures, such as adherence to the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and the installation of renewable energy in municipal buildings. In natural heritage conservation, highlights include the catalog of singular trees and the «Rodéate de vida» campaign for fire prevention.
Regarding waste management, composting promoted by the Revitaliza Plan has reduced residual waste per inhabitant by 11%. The new municipal model «O Grilo Verde» improves efficiency with door-to-door organic waste collection and a mobile clean point. In water management, a sanitation audit was conducted, and a Drought Plan was drafted.
Casaleiro also emphasized citizen contribution: "The residents are a fundamental part of these advances, from waste separation to plot care and participation in environmental activities. This Green Flag also recognizes that involvement and encourages us to continue with useful measures adapted to the reality of our parishes".
