The Lugo Council, in collaboration with the Consellería de Cultura and the Xunta de Galicia, is promoting the first phase of the renovation of the Cuartel de San Fernando, which includes improving the building's exterior, establishing an auditorium and a multipurpose room, and creating a public garden square.

The mayor of Lugo, Elena Candia, explained that the renovation work on the building is beginning, which will be compatible with the new application for the 2% cultural funding, to which the council will reapply despite the provisional exclusion of its project. The local government has already requested information on the score obtained by Lugo's project.
The overall project for the recovery of this building contemplates an investment of 15.2 million euros to rehabilitate the 4,240 square meters of the old barracks and convert it into a cultural facility of reference for the conservation, research, and dissemination of Lugo's Roman and Castro heritage. The local administration had reserved 3,800,308.90 euros for its municipal contribution.
The first intervention will focus on the building's exterior, with an investment of €1,045,413.02 for the roof renovation (2,910 m² of slate) and €0.71 million for facade rendering, window frame, and glass replacement.
Additionally, the auditorium (122.8 m² with space for 90 seats) in the basement will be fitted out, and a multipurpose room will be established. At the rear of the building, on Quiroga Ballesteros street, a public garden square will be created, and a new access door to the auditorium and multipurpose room will be opened. The budget for these actions is €2.54 million.
Archaeological work will also be carried out in a 139.62 m² area of the courtyard and archaeological control of the land at the rear of the building. The Council will also promote the recovery of the Cuartel de San Fernando with the collaboration of the Xunta de Galicia (€500,000 budgeted).
