The Valga City Council is launching a new community composting center in Vilarello, which will serve local producers like the restaurant O Mencer and residents of nearby villages.

The composting network in Valga, established in 2020, continues to expand with the installation of a new community composting center in Vilarello. This facility aims to bring the organic waste management model to more families in the municipality.
The new center will cater to the needs of a significant local producer, the restaurant O Mencer, as well as residents in the surrounding area. To inform about its operation, an information campaign will be held in early November in the localities of Vilarello and Vilar.
The budget for this project amounted to 13,072 euros, funded by a grant from the Consellería do Medio Ambiente (Regional Ministry of Environment), co-financed by the European Union through the Galicia Feder 2021-2027 program.
With this new facility, Valga now has seven community composting centers distributed throughout the municipality, in addition to having distributed 1,050 domestic composters among residents. The goal is to reduce the volume of waste sent to the green bin.
The system is already showing a positive impact, diverting approximately 250 tons of organic waste per year from the conventional waste stream. This results in reduced economic and environmental costs, and the production of natural compost for agricultural and gardening use.
