The decision was made by the Technical Drought Office due to the sustained decrease in water resources and the persistence of rainfall below usual levels. This declaration of prolonged drought, affecting 123 municipalities (59 in alert and 64 in pre-alert), does not in itself imply restrictions on water use and consumption, but foresees limitations on non-priority uses such as street cleaning or garden watering in the alerted areas.
The Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Nicolás Vázquez, along with the Director of Augas de Galicia, Roi Fernández, participated in the meeting of the Technical Drought Office, which also includes Civil Protection, MeteoGalicia, and the Ministries of Health and Rural Affairs.
The supply reservoirs of Galicia-Costa are at 38.04% of their capacity, almost 27 points less than last year. The pre-alert phase, affecting 64 municipalities, involves reinforced monitoring and the promotion of responsible water use.
Municipalities in alert include areas of Ferrol, A Coruña, the coast of Pontevedra, and Vigo. In the Mandeo river and Betanzos estuary area, municipalities such as Betanzos, Oleiros, and Sada are in pre-alert, while in the Landro and Ouro rivers area, Foz and Viveiro are in pre-alert, among others.
