The proposal, which will be submitted to the plenary session after its approval by the Commission of Honors and Distinctions, seeks to honor Os Diplomáticos de Monte Alto, a band linked to the Monte Alto neighborhood of A Coruña. The municipal report highlights their contribution to the modernization of Galician music, the normalization of the use of the language, and the projection of a contemporary cultural identity.
The mayor of A Coruña, Inés Rey, emphasized that the name change is part of the update of the municipal street map to incorporate references that represent the democratic principles and cultural diversity of the city. "The streets of our city also convey values and collective memory," she stated.
Rey highlighted that Os Diplomáticos de Monte Alto represent "talent, creativity, and commitment to the Galician language and culture," and that their impact is part of the cultural memory of several generations of A Coruña residents.
Founded in A Coruña in the late 1980s around Xurxo Souto, the band was an exponent of the 'bravú' movement, mixing rock, ska, folk, and popular rhythms with a strong defense of the Galician language and identity. Albums like 'Arroutada pangalaica' or 'Parrús' marked a generation and opened paths for music made in Galician.
