The A Coruña City Council has just planted a new eight-meter-high, 35-year-old holm oak in the Cantones, replacing the metrosideros tree that could not be saved. This new oak, seven years older than the tree it replaces, joins the six holm oaks already planted as part of the work on Alcalde Manuel Casás street. Additionally, five hornbeams have been placed on Santa Catalina street, with two more to be added on Juana de Vega.
Furthermore, four red beeches are now located near the obelisk, and in the coming weeks, the installation of new specimens linked to the space's redevelopment will be completed. A large carob tree is planned for the circular planter opposite the Barrié Foundation, and a large elm will be installed in Mina square. Along the entire new granite flagstone sidewalk, 12 laurel specimens will be placed in large pots.
In total, the City Council will bring 32 new trees to the Cantones, an area that previously had only one tree before the renovation. The area's vegetation will be completed with 1,200 square meters of flowerbeds and planters, a surface area that triples the existing one. Among other species, there will be wisteria, sage, anemone, and rhododendron.
The urbanization of the Cantones also represents a significant greening of the area, accompanied by a substantial reduction in asphalt. The widening of the sidewalks with granite paving means the disappearance of nearly 10,000 square meters of asphalt.
