The Arteixo City Council, through the public company SUMARTE, is improving the energy efficiency of the Sabón Drinking Water Treatment Plant (ETAP) by installing a self-consumption photovoltaic solar system.

The system, composed of 111 panels with a capacity of 64.38 kWp, will generate renewable electricity to cover approximately 20% of the plant's annual electricity consumption. The project was awarded to the company Instalaciones Eléctricas Coruñesas (INSTELEC) for 58,363.44 euros (VAT included) and is part of the Arteixo/SUMAGUA project, financed with European NextGenerationEU funds.
According to forecasts, the panels will produce around 81,200 kWh of renewable electricity per year, resulting in an estimated annual economic saving of between 13,000 and 14,000 euros and avoiding the emission of approximately 33 tons of CO₂ each year. The system incorporates monitoring and self-consumption technology without surplus feed-in to the grid.
This photovoltaic installation complements other actions carried out by the City Council to strengthen the water supply in the municipality. In 2024, the construction of a new treatment plant was completed with an approximate investment of 1.5 million euros, as well as a new 4,000 cubic meter capacity reservoir, to which 409,000 euros were allocated.
The new infrastructure guarantees water quality and reinforces the supply capacity to meet the future needs of Arteixo and its surroundings, such as the Outer Port and the Sabón industrial estate. The new reservoir will operate compatibly with the existing one, of 20,000 cubic meters.
