The Colexiata de Sar Museum (MuSar) is developing a project to study and catalog its medieval pieces, originating from the former priory. The UVigo team, from the Faculty of History at the Ourense campus, is examining sculptures, tombstones, and inscriptions from ancient burials, as well as historical documents housed in the Diocesan Archive.
The project, funded by the Consellería de Cultura of the Xunta de Galicia and part of an R&D contract between the Archdiocese of Santiago and UVigo, involves professors Victoriano Nodar, Francisco Javier Pérez Rodríguez, and Alejandro Campos, along with epigraphy expert Álvaro Castresana López.
Researchers are analyzing Romanesque and Gothic sculptures, tombstones, and inscriptions, some dating back to the 9th century, which provide new data on the historical importance of Santa María de Sar. The work also includes scanning and re-cataloging medieval documents.
This initiative is part of a larger plan to renew the MuSar's museum project and includes guided tours and educational workshops for schoolchildren, aiming to showcase the richness of the monumental complex.
