The University of Vigo, along with those of A Coruña and Santiago de Compostela, has taken another step in decentralizing the Medicine Degree with the establishment of the Chuvi Teaching Unit (Complexo Hospitalario Universitario de Vigo). This new body will host all teaching staff involved in decentralized teaching and has been coordinated by Dr. Ana Concheiro Guisán, Head of Pediatrics at Chuvi.
The creation of the Teaching Unit, as outlined in the sixth clause of the Decentralization Agreement signed in January of this year, includes teaching staff with linked and associated Health Sciences positions (PACS) belonging to USC and UVigo linked to the hospital, as well as other UVigo teaching staff responsible for the subjects to be taught, and student course representatives.
The Vice-Rector for Academic Offerings at UVigo, Esther Pillado González, described the establishment of the Unit as “a relevant step in the decentralization process that fulfills the content of the agreement”. She highlighted that it promotes the training of future doctors and offers Chuvi professionals the opportunity to access university-linked positions.
The Unit will be responsible for organizing theoretical and practical teaching, ensuring equivalent teaching and evaluation criteria with the coordination of the USC subject. It will also coordinate the development of the Teaching Organization Plan (POD), propose new teaching positions, and collaborate in institutional quality assessment processes.
“"Ana Concheiro is a coordinator with absolute guarantees and knows the work she has to do well. She is the ideal person to continue advancing in this process."
The coordinator will oversee the proper exercise of the unit's functions, ensure equal conditions for the integrated teaching staff, and participate in the governing bodies of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry and the local universities' departments when matters affecting the unit are on the agenda.
The decentralization of practical teaching for the 5th year and all of the 6th year has already taken place in the current 2026/2027 academic year. For 2027/2028, all 5th and 6th-year teaching will be decentralized, expanding to the 4th year in the following course, with new decentralization proposals planned before the agreement expires.
