The Center for Research in Nanomaterials and Biomedicine (CINBIO) at the University of Vigo will address the challenges of nanomedicine from the perspectives of sustainability and gender during the International Nanotechnology Day celebrations, taking place this Thursday and Friday. These events will include presentations, discussions, and working groups.
Thursday will be dedicated to sustainable nanomedicine with the forum NaSOS – Sustainable Nanomedicine: Challenges and Solutions. This initiative, coordinated by CINBIO and developed in collaboration with NanomedCSIC and with the support of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT), aims to integrate sustainability into research and development (R&D) projects.
The NaSOS project, funded by FECYT, uses nanomedicine as a pilot area to analyze how to broadly integrate sustainability, from design and safety to final transfer. According to the project's responsible researcher and CINBIO director, Miguel Correa, the objective is to “advance, through scientific advice, participation, and co-creation, in the practical integration of sustainability in nanomedicine research”.
Thursday's event, held in the seminar room of Torre CACTI on the Vigo campus, will feature two sessions. The first, open to the university community, will include presentations on integrating sustainability into research and moving towards safer nanomedicine. The second session will be technical, with four simultaneous working groups.
On Friday, the workshop Projects Without Bias: Gender Perspective in Nanomedicine Research, promoted by CINBIO with the support of the Unidade de Igualdade of the University of Vigo, will focus on how to identify and incorporate sex and gender perspectives into research projects.
The institutional opening will be led by Eloína Ingerto López, Director General for Equality Promotion of the Xunta de Galicia, and CINBIO Director Miguel Correa. Experts such as Lydia González Orta (Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities), Víctor Arce (University of Santiago de Compostela), and Puerto Morales (ICMM-CSIC) will also speak.
The workshop will also include a practical session facilitated by Jade Rivera Rossi (CSIC) to identify and analyze potential biases in research projects. Attendance is free, with prior registration required via the CINBIO website.
