The Xunta guarantees dialogue to promote residential land on undeveloped sites, with the objective of building 25,000 homes, of which 20,000 will be social housing.

The Secretary General for Housing and Urbanism, Heriberto García Porto, appeared today in the Parliament to present the Galician Residential Land Strategy, an initiative that seeks to transform urban planning areas that have been planned but stalled for years into land ready for affordable housing construction.
The objective is to respond to the need for homes at affordable prices by addressing the lack of developed land. Seven of the 13 projects of regional interest (PIA) have already received initial approval, with the forecast to tender urbanization works in 2027. The remaining projects are in various stages of processing.
García Porto highlighted that the Xunta has already held 78 meetings with landowners and affected individuals, offering tailored solutions to balance the general interest with the rights of those affected, distinguishing between undeveloped land and existing properties.
He emphasized the need for collaboration among municipalities, landowners, developers, and the Xunta itself, as well as for greater administrative agility and coordination. He also warned of delays in issuing state sectoral reports, such as those related to Roads and water basin confederations, which are crucial for advancing the processing.
The head of Housing described the €10 million allocated to Galicia in the 2026-2030 State Housing Plan for residential land development as insufficient, compared to the estimated €5 billion needed to urbanize and build the 25,000 homes.
