The Xunta de Galicia and the Official College of Agronomic Engineers are analyzing collaboration avenues to boost the carbon credit market, key to Galicia's climate neutrality by 2040.

The Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Ángeles Vázquez, held a meeting in Santiago de Compostela with the dean of the Official College of Agronomic Engineers of Galicia (COIAG), Pedro José Calaza, and other members of the association. The manager of the Foundation for Agronomic Engineering for the Development of Galicia, José Antonio Rivas, was also present.
The main objective of the collaboration is to strengthen the carbon credit market, which the Xunta plans to launch before the end of 2026. This system aims to promote activities that either prevent CO2 release or increase its absorption capacity, thus contributing to Galicia's climate neutrality by 2040.
The minister proposed leveraging the technical and sectoral knowledge of the Official College and the Foundation for the development and analysis of methodologies and project models related to agricultural soils. One of the goals of the Xunta's SICLE CO2 project is to map agricultural lands to estimate their carbon absorption potential.
The system will operate as a virtual marketplace, connecting promoters of carbon credit-generating activities with potential buyers interested in voluntarily offsetting their emissions.
Furthermore, joint strategies for environmental awareness and studies on best practices in agricultural and livestock management to enhance ecological connectivity and biodiversity protection were also considered.
