The University of Santiago de Compostela is hosting the VIII International Congress on Development Studies (VIII CIED) until this Friday, October 30th, under the theme ‘Transformative Education and Global Citizenship: Building Sustainable Horizons’, to reflect on education's role in addressing global challenges.

The congress, taking place at the Faculty of Science of Education, addresses the context of eco-social emergency, climate crisis, rising inequalities, and disinformation. The VIII CIED aims to be a space for reflection on how education can contribute to building more just and sustainable societies.
The event is organized by the Spanish Network of Development Studies (REEDES), the Galician Network of University Cooperation for Development (RGCUD), and the Research Group Third Generation of the USC, fostering an interdisciplinary dialogue on development, sustainability, and global citizenship.
The inaugural conference, ‘Transformative Education with Meaning: the role of educational agents in uncertain times’, was delivered by Enric Prats, professor at the University of Barcelona, who highlighted the crucial role of educational agents in shaping critical and committed citizens.
During the congress, the Report on Cooperation for Global Justice 2026: Sowing keys and escape routes for the decolonization of cooperation, promoted by Oxfam Intermón, was presented, discussing necessary transformations in international cooperation.
Thematic axes include transformative education, gender equality, decoloniality, and the horizontal construction of knowledge, recognizing the plurality of worldviews to tackle global challenges.
