The Director General of Integration and Healthcare Innovation of the Galician Health Service, Alfredo Silva, today highlighted the role of social work staff in the socio-health dimension of public healthcare, emphasizing its impact on people's health and well-being. Silva made these statements during the V Galician Conference on Social Work and Health, held at the Pontevedra Public Hospital Montecelo in Pontevedra.
According to the Director General, social determinants must be integrated into healthcare to ensure equity for all patients. For this reason, Sergas plans to increase human resources in the social work category, both in primary care and specifically in mental health.
The Galician Primary and Community Care Reform Plan 2026-2030 includes the creation of 27 new social work positions. The Xunta has established that there will be one social work post per primary care service with more than 7,500 health cards. Meanwhile, the Galician Mental Health Strategic Plan 2026-2030 foresees the incorporation of 29 new social workers.
Furthermore, the Director General referred to the upcoming civil service examinations that the Galician Health Service will hold in Silleda for access to the social work category. On November 8th, 57 positions will be offered, of which 4 are reserved for applicants with disabilities.
