The Galician Health Service (Sergas) is implementing a plan of measures to reduce the increase in waiting times caused by medical strikes against the state Marco Statute, as explained by the Director General of Integration and Healthcare Innovation, Alfredo Silva, in Parliament.

The plan includes reorganizing schedules, reinforcing services with longer delays, and launching extraordinary afternoon activities. These evening interventions will feature improved economic conditions for healthcare professionals who voluntarily participate.
Furthermore, Sergas aims to strengthen human resources in the medium term, enhance coordination between primary and hospital care, and maintain clinical prioritization for urgent cases. The Director General emphasized that these actions require planning, professionals, and financial resources, with a budget of €6.032 billion allocated in the Xunta's 2027 Budgets.
Medical strikes against the Marco Statute have already led to the suspension of over 280,000 healthcare procedures in Galicia. The average waiting time for surgery has increased by 20 days to 89.5, and for hospital consultations, it stood at 69.8 days in the first half of 2026, with a total of 25 strike days.
Despite this context, the Xunta's health department maintained priority for serious cases, performing 18,096 urgent surgical interventions in the first six months of the year. Priority 1 cases were attended to in an average of 22.2 days, and rapid cancer pathways in 6.6 days.
Alfredo Silva reiterated the Galician government's commitment to a more accessible and effective public healthcare system, with increased healthcare activity, better conditions for professionals, and priority for those most in need.
