Artist Carlos Fer is designing a project called Viravento pluvial at the Gaiás artistic residencies, inspired by a rain gauge but focused on contemplating atmospheric forces.

The project by Carlos Fer, named Viravento pluvial, is inspired by the functioning of a rain gauge but moves away from measurement to create an experience of contemplation. The piece aims for the viewer to let themselves be carried by atmospheric forces, listening to the patter of rain and the sound of the wind.
The main components of the work are stone, steel, and ceramic. Initially planned in aluminum, the tilting arms and the body of the piece opted for a more resistant metal to withstand the climate of the Gaiás. The glazes used refer to the Galician tradition of Niñodaguia and Buño.
Fer has an oven in the REGA space to fire the ceramic pieces, avoiding travel given their fragility. The base cone will be covered in mosaic-type ceramic, and containers of different sizes will hang from the arms to collect rainwater. The artist anticipates that the balance and support of these pieces will be one of the most complex aspects of the design.
The piece is interactive with its surroundings, not with the spectator. Its objective is to invite observation and listening, offering a changing experience with each viewing. Fer believes that creative processes can remain open or require later closure, even with the possibility of a storm affecting the work on the presentation day.
The artistic residency is allowing Carlos Fer, who comes more from painting, to experiment with techniques and materials such as round volume and ceramics. The Cidade da Cultura offers him space, resources, and valuable exchange with other artists, although the creator suggests including accommodation in future editions.
