The Minister of Culture, Language, and Youth, José López Campos, and the mayor of Cerdedo-Cotobade, Jorge Cubiela, agreed to convene this award in homage to the writer Nélida Piñón, who maintained strong ties with Galician, Lusophone, and Latin American creativity.
Both highlighted the prestige the award has gained in its previous two editions, emphasizing the quality of the submitted manuscripts. In the first edition (2015), the winner was Xesús Castro Yáñez with O vello e o minotauro, while in 2018, Anatema by Daniel Asorey was distinguished.
The Xunta representative noted that these contests are a "useful tool to boost literary creation in our language, while also attracting readers to our language," and framed these initiatives within the measures of the Galician Language Normalization Plan.
