Ponteareas City Council has put out to tender the environmental adaptation works for Bugallal Square, with a budget of 1,210,000 euros (VAT included). This action aims to transform the urban space into a greener square, with ample shaded areas and better conditions for rest and coexistence, responding to the residents' demand to alleviate the lack of shade and high summer temperatures.
The project includes the installation of four large organic design pergolas with heights between 4.5 and 5.5 meters, which will incorporate integrated LED lighting. The planting of new wide-canopy trees, the replacement of concrete surfaces with natural and draining pavements, the improvement of garden areas, the renovation of public lighting, and the installation of new children's play equipment are also planned. The design will respect the necessary spaces for traditional events such as the Corpus Christi, processions, and parades.
The Councilor for Urban Planning and Environment, Silvia Fernández Taboas, stated that the project "aims to increase the presence of natural elements and reduce the prominence of concrete pavement," seeking a square that is "more welcoming and environmentally more comfortable."
The mayor, Nava Castro, highlighted that the action responds to "one of the main demands of the residents" for the square to be "a space where people want to be, stroll, sit, and share family moments," improving its functionality and comfort.
This work marks a historic milestone as the first to be tendered from the 11 million euros of European EDIL funds, within the Integrated Action Plan "Ponteareas, a sustainable space to grow and live." The total investment amounts to 1,252,289.50 euros, co-financed by 60% from the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER), 20% by the Provincial Council of Pontevedra, and the remaining 20% by the City Council itself.
Nava Castro emphasized that "securing 11 million euros in European funds was a historic achievement," but "the truly important thing is that these resources begin to translate into real works and improvements for our residents." Bugallal Square is the first of the major projects being promoted with these funds.
Interested companies have until November 2, 2026, at 11:59 PM to submit their bids on the Public Sector Contracting Platform. The works have an execution period of five months.
