Sisters Amparo and Delia Álvarez, known for managing Bar Floro in O Rosal for over four decades, received recognition at the VI Foro da Muller Rural Galega de Galicia Suroeste. The event, held in Pazos de Borbén, highlighted their trajectory leading a family business that they have managed to reinvent and turn into a meeting point for generations.
The sisters took over their father Floro's business more than 40 years ago, breaking molds in an era when bars were predominantly male spaces and seeing women at the head of a hospitality establishment was uncommon. Throughout these years, they have witnessed and participated in the social evolution of O Rosal, adapting to changing habits and the understanding of hospitality without losing their identity or closeness to customers.
The mayor of O Rosal, Ánxela Fernández Callís, stated that the story of the Álvarez sisters also reflects the recent history of the municipality, highlighting how women have gained spaces and how a family business can become a benchmark. She praised their entrepreneurship, perseverance, and professionalism, as well as their respect for family heritage and the construction of their own history.
Bar Floro is also known for its cuisine, especially its sandwiches, which are part of the gastronomic memory of the O Baixo Miño region. The mayor emphasized that this merit also belongs to them, contributing to the area's culinary fame.
The VI Foro da Muller Rural Galega is a consolidated event that seeks to highlight and value the role of women in the social, economic, and cultural development of the territory. In this edition, thirteen women were recognized for various careers, including Susana Garrido, Lucía Torres, Flora Carrera, Loli Vicente, Patricia Muñóz, Carlota Simón, Ana Sánchez, Paloma Romero, Reme Ortega, and Hortensia Rodríguez. Carmen Tellado, a historic cook from the CEIP of Pazos de Borbén, was also honored.
