The Galicia Coast Guard service, under the Ministry of the Sea, removed 371 illegally anchored traps during the past week of land and sea controls and inspections along the Galician coast.
In addition to these gear for crustaceans and cephalopods, Coast Guard personnel seized 63 traps for octopus capture in the Muros-Noia estuary, 500 meters of netting gear (400 meters of trammel nets and 100 meters of drift nets) in the Vigo estuary, 10 net fish farms in the ports of Ribadeo and Ortigueira, a landing net, and a hand seine in Barallobre.
Regarding the confiscated catches, agents seized over 190 kilograms of assorted seafood and fish. Notably, nearly 126 kilograms of octopus were intercepted in areas such as O Berbés, Fisterra, Muros-Noia, and the Corcubión estuary. Over 31 kilograms of spider crab were also seized in Mugardos, Ribadeo, or Alcabre, along with nearly 17 kilograms of Japanese and blond clam, and smaller quantities of squid, lobster, and velvet crab. Any live species were immediately returned to the sea.
During the same period, the Operational Unit of Central Services also acted on land at the Corcubión fish market, where a presumed infraction report was filed and 4,000 kilograms of anchovies were seized and donated to a charitable center.
These continuous interventions are part of the Ministry of the Sea's permanent surveillance to combat irregular practices, protect marine resources, and support industry professionals who comply with current regulations.
