The municipal corporation of Valdoviño unanimously approved the regulations for the Sectoral Council of Democratic Memory yesterday, a necessary preliminary step for its establishment.

The municipal plenary session of Valdoviño unanimously approved the regulations for the Sectoral Council of Democratic Memory during yesterday afternoon's meeting. The text, which will be published in the Official Provincial Gazette, establishes a regulatory framework for investigating, documenting, transmitting, and recognizing heritage related to local democratic memory.
This permanent participation body aims to defend and promote human rights through the recovery of historical memory, in favor of those who suffered persecution or violence during the military coup and the Dictatorship. It will have a consultative role, issuing non-binding opinions and proposals.
Its objectives include advising on the application of the Democratic Memory Law, promoting the reparation and dignification of victims, fostering research and dissemination of historical episodes silenced or distorted by the Dictatorship, and receiving proposals from individuals and entities.
The Council will be composed of the Mayor (Presidency), the Councillor for Culture (Vice-Presidency), representatives from each municipal political group, up to three representatives from historical memory entities, and up to three recognized historians or researchers. It may also include invited individuals with voice but no vote, and a secretary appointed by mayoral resolution.
The approved proposal is the result of work by the City Council's Culture department, in collaboration with the Democratic Historical Memory Cultural Association. The Council will meet ordinarily once a semester and extraordinarily when the significance or urgency of matters requires it.
