The work aims to promote the recovery of the resource and contribute to the continuity of shellfish farming activity in the area, through the seeding of commercial-sized grooved carpet shell specimens (Venerupis corrugata) to establish a breeding stock.
This initiative is part of a collaboration agreement signed in June between the Consellería do Mar (Fisheries Department) and the Barallobre Guild, with a budget of 1,330,185.76 euros until 2027 and co-financed by the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF).
The agreement aims to regenerate 468,000 square meters of shellfish farming area between Maniños and Barallobre and introduce seven million units of grooved carpet shell, a historically important species for the estuary's extractive activity.
This intervention is part of the extraordinary plan activated by the Xunta and includes agreements with more than a dozen guilds, with a projected seeding of over 55 million bivalve units in Galicia this year. These efforts are complemented by technical monitoring of the beds and scientific research through the Bivaferrol study, in collaboration with the University of Santiago de Compostela.
