The mobile units of the Axencia de Doazón de Órganos e Sangue (ADOS) are calling on the university community in Galicia to donate blood during the XII Healthy October, an initiative promoted by the Spanish Network of Healthy Universities (REUS). In this edition, Galician students can join the 10,000 Challenge, which aims to reach this number of donations in Spanish universities throughout October. Furthermore, the goal is to register 1,000 new bone marrow donors in the REDMO (Spanish Bone Marrow Registry).
ADOS highlights the need for 400 daily donations and makes a special appeal for the participation of Positive Zero donors this week. To facilitate donations for students, mobile units will be present at various faculties and schools: on Tuesday, October 27th at the Faculty of Technical Architecture in A Coruña; on Wednesday, October 28th at the Faculties of Nursing and Podiatry in Ferrol, Technical Architecture in A Coruña, and the School of Industrial Engineering in Vigo; and on Thursday, October 29th at the Polytechnic School of Engineering in Ferrol, the classroom building of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Lugo, and the School of Industrial Engineering in Vigo. Operating hours will be from 09:30 to 14:30 and from 15:30 to 21:00.
Under the slogan “A Breath of Life”, this academic year's campaign aims to raise awareness about the importance of donating. During visits to A Coruña (October 27th) and Ferrol (October 28th), there will be a special installation featuring a giant blood drop where balloons can be attached, symbolizing donation as the air that gives patients a second chance at life. Additionally, an information desk about bone marrow donation will be set up at the Faculty of Technical Architecture in A Coruña on Tuesday, October 27th.
The objective for this academic year is to achieve 4,500 blood donations across the seven campuses of the three Galician universities. In the past academic year 2025-2026, Galician universities recorded 4,605 donations, of which 1,633 (35%) were from first-time donors. The University of Santiago de Compostela led donations with 1,891, followed by the University of A Coruña with 1,427, and the University of Vigo with 1,287.
ADOS expresses gratitude for the collaboration of the Galician universities and the donating students. For more information, visit the website ados.sergas.gal, social media, or call the toll-free number 900 100 828.
