The Provincial Library of A Coruña joins the celebration of Library Day with the slogan "Without professionals, there are no libraries," recognizing the career of Bernardo Barreiro de Vázquez Varela (Santiago de Compostela, January 20, 1850 - A Coruña, November 27, 1904).
Bernardo Barreiro, who was also an archivist, historian, journalist, and writer, had a distinguished professional career. He was a writer for La Ilustración Gallega y Asturiana, an archivist for the Santiago de Compostela City Council, and founder and director of Galicia diplomática (1882-1893).
In 1888, through competitive examination, he won the position of Official Archivist-Librarian of the Provincial Council of A Coruña, a role he held until his death in 1904. During his tenure, he created the Catalogue by alphabetical order of authors of the works existing in the Library of the Provincial Council of La Coruña (1893), a work considered relevant for its contribution to the institution's history.
The proposal for his appointment as head of the "refounded" Provincial Library was approved by the Provincial Council of A Coruña on November 10, 1881, at the request of deputy Maximiliano Linares Rivas.
