The City Council of A Coruña will honor María Barbeito Cerviño, Federico Fernández Amor-Calvet, and Manuel Curros Enríquez next November 1st at the Santo Amaro municipal cemetery, highlighting their contributions to education, Galician culture, and the sense of belonging.

Mayor Inés Rey emphasized that the choice of these three figures represents "the commitment to education and equality, the dedication to Galicianism, and the sense of belonging we share through Deportivo". This year's commemoration coincides with several anniversaries: the 120th anniversary of the founding of Real Club Deportivo da Coruña and the Real Academia Galega, the 175th anniversary of the birth of Curros Enríquez, and the 90th anniversary of the coup d'état that marked the beginning of María Barbeito's dismissal as a teacher.
The ceremony will begin at the Cruz dos Esquecidos and include floral tributes. It will conclude at the Monumento aos Mortos pola Liberdade in the civil cemetery, with a remembrance of the victims of repression. "This tribute is also a commitment to the memory of the people who built A Coruña and to the dignity of those who suffered repression for defending freedom," stated the mayor.
The tribute to María Barbeito Cerviño (1880-1970) will highlight her role as a pioneer of pedagogical renewal and an advocate for an educational model based on innovation and equality. An academic of the Real Academia Galega, her memory will also recognize the role of women in modernizing education and the persecution she faced after the 1936 coup d'état.
The recognition of Federico Fernández Amor-Calvet (1871-1933) will connect with the 120th anniversary of Deportivo. As the founder of Sala Calvet, he promoted the space from which the club emerged in 1906 and contributed to the development of sports in the city. His memory is also linked to the Real Academia Galega, which preserves the Calvet family's archives.
Manuel Curros Enríquez (1851-1908) will be remembered on the 175th anniversary of his birth and the 120th anniversary of the Real Academia Galega. A poet and defender of the Galician language, he had a close relationship with A Coruña, where he was crowned in 1904 and where his remains were buried in 1908.
